How Many Overnights Is 50/50 Custody? (And 60/40, 70/30)

Custody percentages sound precise until you try to write one into a calendar. A court order does not say “40 percent”; it says which nights the children sleep where, and the yearly total of those nights is the number everything else runs on. Here is the conversion for every common split, and why being off by even a handful of nights can matter.

The conversion: percentages to overnights

A year has 365 nights. Multiply by the share and you get each split’s overnight count:

Two details trip people up. First, 365 does not divide evenly, so a true 50/50 is 182 nights one year and 183 the next, usually alternated in the written plan. Second, the popular schedule names rarely deliver their advertised number exactly: the “60/40” 4-3 week actually produces 156 overnights (a 57/43 split), and “every other weekend” with Friday and Saturday nights lands near 52, which is 14 percent, not 20.

How many overnights is 50/50 custody?

Why the exact count matters

Overnight totals are not trivia. Most state child support formulas read them directly, and several draw hard lines where the math changes:

• Florida switches to a different calculation method entirely once each parent reaches 73 overnights, which is exactly the 20 percent line.
• Maryland moves from the primary-custody worksheet to the shared-custody worksheet once each parent has at least 92 overnights, more than 25 percent.
• Kentucky starts a statutory shared-parenting credit at 88 days a year.

Sit one night per two weeks below a threshold like these and the support calculation can come out hundreds of dollars a month different from a schedule one night above it. How to count overnights correctly

Count where the child sleeps, night by night, over a full year of the actual repeating cycle, then include how holidays and summer breaks override the base pattern. Three rules keep the count honest:

1. Overnights, not hours. In most states an afternoon visit that ends at 8 pm counts for nothing; the night is what registers. A parent with lots of daytime contact but few overnights can look nearly absent to a formula.
2. Run whole cycles. A 2-week rotation needs the full 26 cycles counted; a 10-day rotation does not line up with weeks at all, so count it across the whole year rather than extrapolating one week.
3. Holidays move real nights. If the plan gives one parent every spring break, those nights shift the annual total even though the base rotation ignores them.
