50/50 custody does not automatically mean zero child support in Maryland. Income, qualifying expenses and the applicable worksheet still matter. An equal-time calendar answers a scheduling question, not the whole support calculation.
The 92-overnight rule has an expense condition
Family Law §12-201(o) defines shared physical custody using two conditions: each parent has more than 25% of the year’s overnights, and both contribute to the children’s expenses beyond support payments. The statute describes the annual threshold as at least 92 overnights.

The 92–109-night transition is not a simple cliff
Family Law §12-204(m) includes a graduated adjustment for the parent with 92–109 overnights. It also caps the shared basic transfer at the applicable primary-custody amount. A comparison that skips those protections can misstate the effect of adding nights.
Shared math weights each parent’s income share by time with the other parent, then offsets the obligations. Qualifying child care, insurance and other specified expenses are allocated separately by income share. The complete worksheet matters, not just its first subtotal.
Count dates, not a label
In a repeating 14-night equal-time rotation, each parent has seven nights. That does not make each parent’s total exactly half of every calendar year. A 365-night range cannot split into equal whole nights, and holidays or exceptions may shift the count further.
For a practical check:
- Use the actual beginning and ending dates of the counting period.
- Include the schedule’s holiday and vacation exceptions.
- Keep the overnight count separate from the expense information needed for the shared-custody test.

The current official Worksheet B (CC-DR-035), revised July 2026, specifically instructs that line 6 overnights total 365 and line 7 divides by 365. A custom calendar count is not a substitute for those filing instructions. Its accompanying Worksheet C addresses expense-payment adjustments; the final order is not just the basic overnight offset.
Prepare the full calculation
Have both parents’ income information, applicable adjustments, the children’s qualifying expenses, and the actual overnight schedule available. The two-child Maryland example explains a primary-custody calculation; it is not a prediction for a shared-custody case.
