What net resources means in Texas
Net resources is a defined statutory term, not a synonym for take-home pay. Tex. Fam. Code 154.062 starts from almost all gross income, wages, overtime, tips, bonuses, commissions, self-employment income, rental income, retirement, and unemployment among it, and subtracts a short, fixed list of items.
For an employee, the subtractions are social security taxes (6.2 percent), Medicare (1.45 percent), and federal income tax computed as if the parent were single with the standard deduction, using the tax chart the Office of the Attorney General publishes each year. Union dues actually paid and the cost of the children’s health and dental insurance the parent covers come off next.
Nothing else reduces net resources. Rent, car payments, credit card bills, and voluntary retirement contributions do not count, however real they are in a monthly budget.
The guideline percentages then apply to net resources, but only up to a ceiling. The 2026 cap is $11,700 a month. Net resources above that figure are still net resources; they just do not add to the guideline computation.
Pay varies during the year? Our Texas overtime and bonus income guide shows how to organize the records and avoid counting the same earnings twice.
A worked example
- An employee grosses $5,000 a month, paid as a W-2 employee, with no union dues or insurance deductions.
- Social Security (OASDI) at 6.2 percent is $310.00.
- Medicare at 1.45 percent is $72.50.
- Federal income tax from the 2026 OAG chart, computed as a single filer with the standard deduction, is $418.33.
- Net resources are $5,000.00 minus $310.00 minus $72.50 minus $418.33, which is $4,199.17.
- That figure is below the $11,700 cap, so the full $4,199.17 is the guideline computation base.
The steps above follow the calculation method described on our methodology page.
Texas net resources FAQs
What counts as net resources in Texas?
Almost all income counts: wages, overtime, tips, bonuses, commissions, self-employment income, rental income, retirement, unemployment, and more. The statute then subtracts social security taxes, federal income tax for a single filer with the standard deduction, union dues, and the children’s health and dental insurance premiums the parent pays.
Is net resources the same as take-home pay?
No. Only the deductions Tex. Fam. Code 154.062 lists come off. Voluntary items like 401(k) contributions, health insurance for the parent alone, union dues not actually paid, or debt payments do not reduce net resources, even though they reduce an actual paycheck.
What is the net resources cap for 2026?
The Office of the Attorney General set the cap at $11,700 a month, effective September 1, 2025. Net resources above that amount are still counted as net resources; the guideline percentages simply stop applying past that line.
How is net resources different from gross income?
Gross income is nearly everything you earn before any subtraction. Net resources is what remains after the tax-chart conversion and the specific Section 154.062(d) deductions. For an employee grossing $5,000 a month, net resources commonly land around $4,200, not $5,000.
Does this calculator handle self-employment income?
Not the tax conversion. The Office of the Attorney General publishes a separate self-employment (SECA) chart that this tool does not encode. Self-employed parents can enter their net resources figure directly if they already know it.
Good to know
- The Office of the Attorney General runs an official Monthly Child Support Calculator that performs this same conversion as one step of a larger guideline computation. This page isolates that one step so it can answer "what are my net resources" on its own.
- The 2026 tax charts were filed with the Texas Register on December 10, 2025, and are re-published every year; a change in the annual chart changes the net resources figure without any change to gross pay.
How to use this calculator
Enter gross pay in any common frequency and this tool converts it to monthly, runs the 2026 OAG tax chart, and subtracts the deductions you enter. The result is your net resources, the exact figure the Texas guideline percentages apply to.
If you already know your net resources, for example from a pay stub or a prior order, enter it directly instead of gross pay to skip the tax-chart step.
This tool computes net resources only. For the full guideline support amount, including the multiple-family adjustment and the low-income schedule, use the Texas child support calculator.
What this estimate includes
- The 2026 OAG employee tax chart: OASDI, Medicare, and federal income tax
- Union dues and the children’s health and dental insurance deductions
- The $11,700 net resources cap, shown separately from your uncapped net resources
- The standard guideline percentage schedule for 1 to 5 or more children, for reference
What it leaves out
- The self-employment (SECA) tax chart; self-employed parents should enter net resources directly
- The multiple-family and low-income percentage tables (see the full child support calculator)
- Any support amount itself; this tool stops at net resources
